Summary

A beautiful but difficult loop from Thannheim to three lakes (Lache, Traualpsee, Vilsalpsee). The climb up can be bypassed by taking the cable cars from the parking lot. Day-pass parking is 5€, and a one-way trip from the cable car is 23€. The high-trail is well maintained but can be busy during the high season. The ascent to the Sulzspitze (2080m) is worth it but difficult. Be aware that both the ascent and descent are very steep (~33%). There are slippery sections with assisted walking. All that said, the views are truly bizarre, and the Vilsalpsee is 45 min. away from parking; one can stay there to relax to fill out the day, so remember to bring swimming trunks!

The alpine high-road between the cablecars and the lakes. Noah confident at the start of the hike. View from the top of the Sulzspitze. Noah beginning the descent. Noah swimming in the Vilsalpsee.

  • Beautiful lakes and stunning views,
  • Very busy due to cable cars,
  • Optional segments (Sulzspitze and ascent),
  • Swimming in the Vilsalpsee a treat after a days work!
